In August of
2002 I got a chance to do something I had always dreamed about, driving
a sprintcar! I attended Dave Blaney's Outlaw Driving Experience at
Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa, Iowa. I purchased a 20 lap
driving package. It consisted of about 45 minutes of
instructions and then we were supposed to drive a 10 lap session and then
have an instructor evaluate our driving. And then continue with
another 10 lap session. We were suppose to sign in between 8:30
and 9:00 A.M. Have our instructions and be done driving by noon.
As it turned out we didn't get our instructions until about 11.
They were having the ride along program also. The people that
spent the most money by buying a driving package had to wait while they
let the people doing the ride along program went first. This was
the Friday of the nationals and people just continued to keep coming for
the ride along program. The track was dry before a car even made
it onto the track. The driver driving the two seater spun the car
3 different times before finally backing it in hard enough to disable it
for the rest of the day. I finally made it on to the track around
2 P.M. After doing a 10 lap session and then waiting to do my next
10 laps I finally made it out of there at 3:30. We were suppose to
get a souvenir and a certificate at the end of the day, we received
neither. Let me say the people running the school were very nice
and handled themselves very well do to the circumstances. I
understand things go wrong but I felt there was little organization.
I would suggest if you were interested in attending a sprintcar school
do some research to find out which one is the best.
